It is not the walls which keep me safe
nor the windows or door
It is not the furnace which every day
keeps me always warm
It is not my bank account which keeps me afloat
It is not my job which provides
It is not my voice which connects me
or the phone that’s by my side
Every day I wake up
assured that I am safe, am free
Every night I lay down
sure it’s because of me
But in the silence
listening to the wind
I realize this could all easily go again
and that what truly holds me firm,
the rock which steadies my boat’s stern,
is God, who watches over me
who grew the tree used in the wall
who honed the sand to make the glass strong
who allows the heat to warm my whole
who gave me hands to reap and sow
and if the house falls to the ground
and if my job should leave me now
and if my hands should wither away
and if my voice should die today
the Lord will carry my soul to shore
shall take my ash and create amore
The strength of what’s eternity
is with the Lord who carries me.
